If you have never worn dentures before, you may be tempted to think that just because they are not your natural teeth, the days of brushing your teeth are over. Actually nothing could be further from the truth.
Food debris, plaque and bacteria can still build up on your dentures, just as they can on your teeth. In particular, food debris can accumulate in area between the your dentures and your gum or upper palate. So, you will need to clean them at least once a day.
There are some key differences between cleaning your dentures and brushing your teeth. First, do not use toothpaste on your dentures. Many toothpastes contain abrasives that will damage your braces. You can use a toothpaste that is formulated to clean dentures, although many people use hand soap or dish soap. Scrub your dentures very gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush or a denture brush. Clean your dentures over a towel or a sink full of water to minimize the chance of breaking them, if you should drop them.
Some studies show that you should not wear your dentures while you sleep. However, your dentures need to remain moist if they are to retain their shape. You should place your dentures in a soaking solution when you go to bed, or if you need to take them out for an extended period of time. Doing so will keep them moist, and the solution will also clean them.
