What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown protects teeth that have been compromised by injury, decay, or dental treatments like root canals by covering them with a lifelike restoration that restores their strength, size, and appearance. In some cases, they are used to hold appliances like dental bridges in place. While they can be made from many types of materials, our office uses crowns made from zirconia or E-Max that can match the rest of your smile while defending the treated teeth from injury and infection. These crowns usually require no special care beyond a proper oral hygiene routine. While nearly anyone can receive a dental crown, you’ll need to have a consultation at our office to confirm your candidacy for the treatment.
The Dental Crown Process
While dental crowns are traditionally placed over two or more appointments, our office uses advanced CEREC technology to place crowns in a single day. The process begins with a consultation, during which we will examine your mouth, take X-rays, discuss your options, and answer any questions you may have. After our dentist determines that a crown is the best course of treatment for you, they will begin the process by removing some structure from the tooth to make room. While local anesthetics render the procedure painless, we offer dental sedation if you need a little extra help sitting comfortably. Your teeth will then be scanned, and a special machine will use this data to mill your personalized crown down from a block of E-Max or zirconia.
Once the crown is complete, our dentist will carefully cement it in place so it fits comfortably with the rest of your bite before making any final adjustments. You’ll then be free to go your way while enjoying your beautifully restored smile.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown
Neglecting to get a needed dental crown can lead to further oral injuries and infections that can be quite uncomfortable or even cause permanent damage. Dental crowns also offer benefits like:
- Allowing you to chew comfortably again
- Protecting your teeth from further damage, which can potentially save them from extraction
- Dental crowns can correct multiple problems at once by addressing both structural and cosmetic dental issues.
- We customize each crown to match the rest of the smile, meaning that casual observers won’t notice that it’s there.
Keeping dental crowns in good shape usually only requires a standard oral hygiene routine that includes brushing, flossing, antibacterial mouthwash, and regular dental checkups. With excellent care and maintenance, a crown can last for fifteen years or more.
